Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1981 camaro, exhaust leaks, fluid leaks

Question
I have an 81 camaro, originally v6 229, that I installed a reblt 350. I have had to change the battery ground twice, without really starting the car much. The wire is huge, and it just corrodes and loses contact. it is grounded to the alternater and fender(small black)..I think it may be too much juice. Also, the car doesnt turn over smoothly, more like lurching, which had me thinking weak battery. Now its possible Im overcharging it? the computer is non operational.
Also had difficulty installing the retaining bolt for the dip stick. the stick is loose and I notice light, smelly, smoke coming from that area on the car. No fluid leaks or exhaust leaks. The car has a carter carb.

You should get a std. size  battery  wire  and run it to the  block for the ground  and the small wire to the fender. the large wire you have on it might be made of something that is putting out a chemical that causes rust.
and as far as the lurch or jumping when starting, etc. IS the Distributor in the right way as if the timeing is off or if it is even off by one (1) tooth it will run but never right and it can or will cause the starting that you have. check to see if you are on the no#. spot when on T.D.C. on the timeing mark is on.remove the dist. cap and the rotor should be on the no#1 plug wire . ( ****I would first check the timeing **** )OK Roger also you should  start it a few times a week for a min or so any way.
