Classic/Antique Car Repair: 73 MGB Clutch, clutch fluid, clutch system

Question
Hi: If the clutch is not engaging could this mean that the system needs bleeding or is there a way to adjust the clutch?

Thanks so much

Answer
Roger:

The fluid clutch is "self adjusting" meaning that there is no external adjustment. If it is not engaging then it could be a couple of things. First, as you correctly presume, it could be air in the clutch fluid system. This can be bled out. There is a bleeder on the slave cyl. The other thing is that the clutch plate could be completely worn out or almost worn out and soaked with oil. You could also have highly worn out connecting pins and bushings in the clutch system which need replaced. Or finally, it could be a bad rubber hose restricting fluid flow internally.  Only a relatively small amount of movement works theh clutch. If parts are worn excessively it can be hard to engage and disengage until proper clearances are restored.

I would first try to bleed the system.

Good Luck!
