Classic/Antique Car Repair: oil change, oil leaks, auto parts store

Question
I am having trouble getting the oil filter off my 1974 MGB. I have removed the generator to get a better grip but it still  won't budge. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Patrick,
It should be a conventional spin-on filter on a 74 unless it has been changed to the older cartridge type. If it is the spin-on type and it is just tight you can use a standard filter wrench or large channel locks. It may have been installed with a filter wrench and thus be too tight. The spin on filters should only be tightened by hand. If the new filter is the same size as the one on the car, just go to the auto parts store you purchased the filter from and purchase a filter wrench of that size. You should not have to remove anything to remove the filter if you purchase the correct type of filter wrench. Put your alternator back on and take the car to the parts store and ask them for the type of filter wrench that will remove that filter. I found the "bottom load" type filter is best removed with a strap type filter wrench. This will also remove the "top load" type also. When you put the new filter on (bottom load type)first fill the new filter with oil and coat the rubber seal with oil then spin it on untill it stops and turn it a quarter turn more by hand.
A quick rough way mechanics sometimes use to get a tight filter off is to drive a screwdriver through the side of the filter and use the handle of the screwdriver to loosen the filter then pull out the screwdriver and spin the filter off. This method requires a drain pan under the car as it makes a mess.
BE SURE! to spin the engine over after new oil and filter is installed with the coil wire out of the cap and grounded untill you see oil pressure on the gauge. DO NOT START THE ENGINE until you do this! After you see oil pressure on the gauge replace the coil wire back into the cap and start the engine and quickly look under the car to be sure of no oil leaks.
I hope this helps,
