Classic/Antique Car Repair: 396 Starter problems, chevy starter motor, mini starters

Question
I have a 396 BB in a 1970 Chevelle. It's bored .60 over so it's pretty high compression. Problem I have is with starters. I've been through about 10 of them from the local Pep Boys/AutoZone replacement units to the mini-starters ordered on-line. Usually when I install a starter, I can get it to work a couple of times before it starts to grind into the flywheel. I've used shims, but after the first couple of times turning over the engine, it'll start to grind. I've replaced the flexplate several times. I don't know what to do now.

Answer
Bill;
  I had the same thing with my 396 ss 1969 all starter probs. well I got a hi-per starter for it and it worked till I got rid of it. I dont know of the mod. # or any thing but I remember it was a spl. hi. per. 454 chevy starter motor.So all I can tell you is to try a starter that is for a 454 chevy Hi.Per. motor as it worked for me .OK
good luck
