Classic/Antique Car Repair: Elec. Problem, neutral safety switch, tom woolf

Question
Hi Thomas, My name is mike and i'm hoping you could possibly help me out.  I have a 1983 CJ-7 jeep that is being restored from the ground up. I do not work on cars for a living, but do have some knowledge.  However not in electrial problems at all.  The whole jeep was striped down to bare frame and put back togather.  However when i tried to start the jeep it was completely dead. No sound at all.  I think the jeep is ground good.  At the firewall, starter bolt, motor and the frame.  I have power from the battery to the one side of the starter solinoid, but don't know what to do next.    the motor was running before taken apart.  258 straight six, auto tranny.  Head lights  work. Any ideas where to start would be great. thanks

Answer
Hello Mike,

Question for you? the starter has a solenoid on it right? You have a main lug for the battery and one or two small lugs?
There is a neutral safety switch check that. you need to put a test light on the small wire at the starter. you should have power when you try to start it. If not then find the neutral safety switch and check for power there on both sides.(it's on the brake pedal or clutch pedal.) If the starter has two small lugs and only one small wire the wire goes on the "S" terminal. Mike email me back!
