Classic/Antique Car Repair: cams, lifter puller, machine bolt

Question
Hi I have a new cam but I never put one in before can you tell me if it is a big job? it is for a 327 cu.in. motor

Answer
ok-let me tell you that if you never did it before it is good to learn so go by the book or be shure to have some one that knows what to do.
as you must take the radearor out and waterpump etc. all that is in its way also you will have to drop the front of the oil pan a lil to get the timing cahin cover off so you know now that all of that must be out of the way to get the cam out and new one in also you will have to take out the distributor and remove both valve covers and loosen up all rocker arms than get a lifter puller and you will have to take off the intake manifold and linkage and than pull out all of the lifters than remove the chain and i do recomend that you put a new chain on also a new cam gear if the crank looks ok you can get away with using it or else you will have to get the big machine bolt out from  crank than get a puller than press the new gear on so use the old one if it is ok, as long as the teeth are not all sharp or barbed or dont look good. there is a lot of work to do it in the car as i have done it only one time in the car and it is a pain in the neack but with the motor out of the car it is a piece of cake, so think about doing some more engine work to that motor as you can make it run real good for not that much cash, like head work , intake, let me know if you want to put a engine together ok.as just putting in the cam is going to be a lot of work for someone that never did it and  I say you must have someone that knows how to do it as the timing marks must all be set right and replacing the distributor is another task so think about it ok
