Classic/Antique Car Repair: lift front end on 66 chevy, chevy ss, chevy 396
QuestionI have a 66 chevy ss and i would like to lift it a bit so it is at least 4 inches higher. what do you recomend? As I was going to use spring ext. the rubber coil type if the front and rear.
Answer OK today is a good day for me as this is a second question that I do know about as I have had a lot of work in this area.
!- do you have a small or big block engine in the car ?
if a small block I would go for a set of new chevy 396 h.d. springs for the front end and with a good set of gas shocks.
2-if a bigger motor go for a set of 409 station wagon h.d. springs for a auto tranny. with a set of good gas shocks. so you now will have a good front end with a bit of solid height.
now for the rear.
if you are going to race go for a set of bars that clamp on and around the banjo with a c clamp as this will lift you a min of 6 to 8 inches but if not go for a set of heavy duty towing springs and add a set of a good make of air schoks and be shure to use a separate line for each shock do not use a single line that works for the both pair set it up so each is on a separate air line. and use a set of schock extentions thay are only about 10.00 extra. this way you will have a bit more give so you will not bounch or rip them out .this should do you right and do not max out on the air p.s.i. on the shocks as you could blow a line and that is why i recomend separate lines in case you blow a line the two will not go out on you only one will go out. so be shure to do that. I think that you will be more than happy with the height that you get also not to mention the easy labor and the low cost for the job.BUT PLEASE REMEMBER THIS you must be real careful when you replace the front springs if you never have done this be real careful as it can rip your head right off. or get seriously hurt. you must use spring compressors and be shure that you do know what you are doing as this is a seriously dangerous job if not done right. ok so be careful please.bigw45
