Classic/Antique Car Repair: WONT RUN, 69 chevy, holly carb

Question
I have a 69 chevy nova with a rebuilt 327 in it. It has never been running ever since it came back from the engine place as it was running there great and pussing apx. 340 h.p. on the machine, it came here in a box with no carb.or dist. in it, as thay used there stuff to run it. it is a 327cu.in with a fuely cam and the large 202 valve heads. i have a 650 holly carb on it now on a low profile intake manifold.I have a mallory h.d. dist. in it and it will not start, at times it will pop and spit up threw the carb. I had 3 differnt people put the dist. in for me and it will not run. as it was running great in the shop.
what do I do as I'am going crazy with this. help please.thank you Ronnie

Answer
OK=Ronnie
  you say that the motor was runnin at the shop, if that is correct, was it droped at all ?    ok first with the dist. cap off crank the engine over to see if the dist. is turning around. if yes do the following.
1-remove the first spark plug on the drivers side.
2-place your thumb into the spark plug hole and have someone turn the motor over a clikc at a time BUT first remove the coil wire so you do not get zapped.
3-now your thumb will go pop and get pushed out, stop cranking when this happens, now look at the crank mark and it should be on or close to the t.d.c. mark if yes good if it is a few marks away try to turn the engine over by hand, car in nut. and try to thrn the belts till the mark gets on t.d.c.ok-good
4-now thak the dist, first if it is a mallory duel point be sure that the points are ok.now put the rotor on so it is facing the no# 1 plug wire on the cap,mark the spot on the dist. out side with a marker so you can see it. now keeping the rotor on the no#1 spot drop the dist. into the hole slow and easy. it it is lined up with the mark but will not drop in amy more do not sweat, it should be lined up with the camshaft gears so now it only has to join with the oil pump slot, so hold the dist. down and have someone tap the key till it will drop into place, so now you should be on the no# one spot. ok put the dist. clamp on snug but so you can turn it when needed. if you wish to be 100% shure do the no#1 plug pop again and when it pops it should be right on the no 1 plug wire. of so great if not keep doing the above till you get it. now check the gap un the points and if good try to start it. if it starts let it warm up a bit than by ear turn your dist untill you hear the motor sounding good and starting each time you start it up. ok now you are all set to time the engine, find the specs and to the timing, some times you might have to experiment a bit
as the book might not have the right specs for you as when you switch engine parts you might find that a few marks advanced could be better as this is trial and error, so be paitent.also if you still get poping check your plug wires as thay should be at 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 if i'am not mistaken.
so now you should be running good. as you say it is a new motor so do not push it for at least 1000 miles and i would use good oil and change it at 500 miles and at 1000 miles again than at each 1000 for at least the first 5000 miles to be sffe. do not rev that engine over 4 or 5 r.p.m.s for some time as the rings must sea and valves also if you do you will be smoking oil for ever.just go out on long drives at 55/60 no more give it time to break in as this is the most serious time of break in.you can do a lot of damage to it if you jump on it early in the break in period. i know as it happened to me with my first engine when i was 16 i had only 2 hours on it and i went out and put the pedel to the floor and i herd a bang and the wheels locked up, i put the clutch in than i went , coasted i let the clutch out and i locked up again so i put the clutch in and coasted to the side of the road and there was a giant smoke cloud in back of me, well i looked under the car and my oil pan looked as if someone shot it with a shotgun as a new hi domed piston was all gone and the rod was into the side of the  cyld wall so i blew that motor. and when i took it all apart it was full of lil pcs. of piston everyplace.
so i think this will help you. be paitent.not sorry
