Classic/Antique Car Repair: Gas Fumes, bad fire, full tank

Question
I just bought a 1950 Chevy Deluxe and brought it home to keep in my attached garage.  However, once I filled up the tank, the gas fumes became  so strong that they can be smelled in the room next to the garage, where the door is located.  Also, the garage smells worse than a gas station.  Is there anything that can be done to prevent this, ie keep a low gas tank or some type of fix?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
This shouldn't be happening - you have a fuel leak somewhere.   Take the car to a gas station and put it up on the lift.  Keep looking until you find the leak - then fix it.  This is dangerous.  Even if it only happens with a full tank, it would still be leaking somewhat as you drive it because the gas sloshes around as the car moves.  All it takes is a little leak to start a really bad fire - don't just ignore this!
