Classic/Antique Car Repair: electrial short on MGB, 1977, brown wires, mgb

Question
-------------------------Brian, I disconnected the three heavy brown wires from the starter and reconnected the battery. I lost my draw. I found a small plug-in wire that was off near the main connection. Would that affect a short?

I developed a short circuit on my MGB. It happened after I hit a chug-hole pretty hard. I first noticed it when I drove at night. My lights went dim, and I thought at first I had a ground wire loose. I physically checked everything I could and finally had my Alt. checked. It had blown a regulator. After getting the Alt. fixed, I figured that was all the problem I had, but I still have the short. I know because with everything turned off on the car, I get a strong spark when I hook up my battery. I have gone over all my plug-in connection, my headlights, park lights, etc. I pulled my four(4) fuses out and checked continuity to grnd. I get a high reading on all the connections.  Can you give me some advise on the best way to trace this short down?

Charles:

Please check your starter. Disconnect and see if you still have the draw.  let me know.

Answer
Small wire plug in?  Could if it were hot and contacting the chassis. But my bet is a bum starter. You could "plug-in" the small wire by itself and see if your draw comes back, but I think you need to either rebuild your starter or get a new one.
