Question - Thanks for the careful reply. I do have a wiring diagram. Can I FAX it to you? I have been told by a friend that the ammeter may be faulty and I can check that by using the multimeter across the connections to the ammeter to see if current is reaching it. Will that work?

The ammeter in my 1965 Corvette doesn't work. I have verified with a multimeter(at the battery) that the alternator is charging. The alternator is NOT a one wire, but is original. Since it is likely that a wire buried in a harness somewhere is the problem, how can a wire another connection to the alternator? Any other suggestion will be appreciated. I am a novice.

I took some extra time with this because I thought I might have a wiring diagram for your car, but it turned out that I do not.   You are going to have to find one, perhaps your local library has the shop manuals for these cars, and you can always copy the pages you need.

If you are going to be keeping the car, watch eBay for a manual to come up - they go pretty cheap, and they are invaluable for things like this.

There were so many different ways that the ammeters were hooked up that I wouldn't be wise to try to advise you in detail without having the wiring diagram to look at..

I'm sorry not to be more help.

I'm so sorry to tell you that I had a computer crash on me last night, and your FAXes got lost in the shuffle.

I know this cost you money to send the FAX, and I really apologize, but can you send them again?  I've switched to a different computer, and I don't think this will happen again!

Your FAXes did come through just fine, all 4 pages, they just went into the dumper before I could look at them!

Thanks.

Dick

Answer
OK, got them and printed them out immediately - they came out fine.  I'll need a little time to study them, and I'll get back to you.

I noticed on your header that you are with the EPA.   My brother-in-law, Dr. William H. Farland, is some sort of a high muckity-muck at EPA in DC.   I think he is a deputy assistant director of some sort, but I'm probably not up to date.   To me, he's just my wife's little brother!

If by any wierd coincidence, you run into him, tell him you ran into me on this site.   He attended the family reunion in Nashville this previous weekend, and is off to Woods Hole for this week.

In case you want to reply directly, my e-mail is dickb@sdccu.net
