Classic/Antique Car Repair: gas & antifreeze components, valve cover gasket, antifreeze components

Question
Brian, I had my 76 MG motor rebuilt and have now come across some conflicting info.

1. What type of gas should be placed in this vehicle?
My restoration guy says hi test as he has placed hard seats in the engine.  What do you think?

2. Should I be using lead additives in my engine with hi test or any other gas?

3. Another mechanic tells me that my axel strap is frayed?  Is this serious if so where would I get one?

3. The valve cover has had a cork seal replaced as well.  Do these need to be torqued regularly, if so at what pressure.
Thanks if you can help

Answer
Hi Terry:

Since you had hardened seats installed, I run regular unleaded, or plus.  If the engine starts to "ping" when you run it under load- like going up hill, or hard acceleration, then go to the premium (and/or adjust-retard the timing a degree or two).

2.) no, not really needed with the hard seats.

3.)no, not real serious - it's a rebound strap for the rear axle. Should replace it when you get a chance. Moss Motors sells them. Look to "mossmotors.com"

4.) no, the cork valve cover gasket doest need to be re-tourgued regularly- just sealed well when installed. I use gasket cement on the cover only. Just smear a thin coating of regular grease on the cyl. head surface and tourgu to 5-7 ft. lbs ought to do it. This way you can take the cover off and on for valve adjustments without ruining the gasket. Make sure all surfaces are really clean and smooth before you start. Your shop manual ought to have a torgue value.

Good Luck
Brian
