Classic/Antique Car Repair: oil pans, 39 ford, ford 302

Question
Dear Dick,

I have a question regarding small block oil pans.  I hope that you can help.  I have a 67 Ford 302 which will be rebuilt and installed in my 39 ford sedan.  The engine currently has a front sump oil pan, which has a clearance issue with the front crossmember (added for Mustang II IFS).  I have a friend who has a 302 from an 87 Town Car.  It has a different pan, with the sump in the rear.  What would be invoved in changing the pans?  I am guessing that the oil pickup would be different.  Any other issues?

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Well, I have a rule (as I say in my introduction) that I don't get involved in modifications, but I'll make a guess on this one - if you will understand that I really don't know an 87 from a 2007!   My guess would be that you can change the pan and the oil pump, with all the oil pickup hardware (screen, float, plumbing) and be home free.

I have to ask though, what is wrong with the original flathead?  These were excellent engines - with a unique sound - a real pleasure to start and drive- are you sure you want to turn your car into something so inauthentic?  Of course you are already deep into the street rod ethic, with your modern front end, so I know you don't care about keeping anything original.

Anyway, good luck to you,

Dick (still driving his 1947 Packard with pride and pleasure!)
