Classic/Antique Car Repair: 69 Camaro Crank Case Ventilation, 69 camaro, crank case

Question
I have the stock snorkel air cleaner on a 2 barrel 307 engine. It has oil in the bottom of the housing. The air filter is saturated with what appears to be oil and so is the white filter material over the fresh air hose fitting. I have had the valve covers off and all appears very clean with no buildup. The PCV valve has been replaced recently as well. I don't think this is normal. Can you help me with suggested ways to trouble shoot this situation and possible solutions?

P.S. sorry about the wrong email address the other 2 times.

Answer
Oil coming through the crankcase vent system is a sure sign that there is oil vapor in the crankcase - this can only be due to worn rings.  How many miles on this engine?  If this symptom exists, your next step should be to have a compression test done on the engine, and if the compression looks low on one or more cylinder, do a leakdown test on the low cylinders.  If my guess is right, you are due for a ring job (and probably a total engine rebuild if you want to do it right).

Sorry to be the messenger, but oil vapor means blowby, and that is a sign of a very worn engine, or at least one with some bad piston rings.
