Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1953 Kaiser jumping out of overdrive, engine blowby, vent system

Question
Hi Dick!

I tried tracing the wires with not much luck
I had six volts at the govener and six volts on two wires at the kick down switch, and none at the solenoid, so I took the govener off and cleaned it with some brake  clean and it has stayed in O.D. so far I onley test drove it a fue miles to test it.

I done another thing to it lets see if you approve,
I connected a hose from the valve cover breather to the vaccum port at the bottom of the carbrater I was getting fumes inside.

Would you reccmond changing it to 12 volts?
what would I have to do.

thank you

Bill

Answer
Glad your overdrive seems to be working now.

Changing your car to 12 volts is not necessary or desireable, regardless of what you will hear from folks who are having problems with their 6 volt cars.   Changing to a higher voltage will mask some of the deterioration caused by poor maintenance, but sooner or later it will lead to other problems.  Changing to 12 volts on a car with overdrive is a nightmare, because all the electrical parts have to be changed.

If your car has a properly maintained charging system, a good battery, and proper battery cables of at least 2-ought size, and good grounding straps from the engine (starter bolt) to the frame, it should have no problem starting.

Your fume problem is due to blow-by, a sign of engine wear, but routing the fumes through the intake manifold is a good solution, as long as you use a PCV valve in the hose to keep flashback from the intake from igniting the crankcase fumes, which could get very exciting, to say the least.

What you have done is installed part of a modern crankcase vent system.  If you still smell fumes from the road draft tube, you can plug that off and allow more vent fumes to pass through the intake manifold - that is the way all cars built since 1962 have been made.

Sooner or later, you are going to have to rebuild that engine - blowby indicates worn cylinder walls and rings (and probably many other parts).
