Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1967 Chevy P/U, harness manufacturer, san bernardino ca

Question
I live in no. California (Sonoma, 40 miles from S.F.)I want to restore my truck. First is an electrical short. I think I should have the loom replaced. Any suggestions how I can find the best shop to fix it. I also need body work done. Thanks

Answer
It is very expensive to hire someone to do electrical work -if you have any skill at all with normal hand tools, you can change your own wiring harness.  You need to contact one of the vendors who make replacement wiring harnesses to find out what one will cost, but as yours is a very simple vehicle, my guess would be under $500.  They come with very careful directions as to how to replace it yourself.

You can do a search yourself for a harness manufacturer, or you can contact "Y and Z's Yesterdays" in San Bernardino CA for an estimate.  I've had very good luck working with them.

As for finding a good body shop - you'll have to ask others in the old car hobby in your area.   Go to your local cruise nights (held at a local diner or burger joint most Saturday nights - check your local paper for time/place) and just chat up the other folks you meet there.  If you drive your truck to the gathering, you will draw a crowd of interested people, most of whom will be very happy to give you advice.  Don't take their word for it, though, as some will have an ax to grind.  Go to the shop and evaluate it yourself - and don't leave your truck there until you and the proprietor have agreed on a written estimate AND A SCHEDULE!

Old trucks are becoming more and more sought after as collector vehicles - they are simple and easy to restore, and great to own!  Good luck with yours.

Dick.
