Dodge Repair: 1986 mitsu montero/dodge d50 2.6l wont start

QUESTION: Hello, I have a 1986 mitsubishi montero that I replaced the 2.6l that was in it, with the same 2.6l from dodge d50.The engine swap was completed and at the end I found out the engine was locked up.I filled the cylinders with pb blaster for a couple of days and then my friend accidentally bumped the starter instead of letting me slowly work it loose with a breaker bar. it is now unseized but it wont start. it has new distributor cap,spark plug wires,spark plugs, and a new coil,and is getting spark, after an hour of messing with timing and spraying carburetor cleaner down the carb and pouring gas in it, it started and ran for about 3-4 seconds but only while spraying carb cleaner in it. it now will fire but wont start at all just turn over and fire and will only do so with carb cleaner sprayed directly into the intake.it has a brand new weber carb on it and seems to be getting fuel. could this be a compression problem?

ANSWER: Hi Dylan,
The best way to tell would be to check the compression. But the fact that it will run with carb cleaner suggests that the issue may be the fuel pump is not getting power because of an issue with the automatic shutdown relay not getting the go ahead to close. I don't have wiring diagrams/manual for the vehicle but if there is an automatic shut down relay you could remove that and temporarily jump a wire from the front pin socket to the rear pin which with the key in the run position should cause the fuel pump to hum. See if that is the case and then try the starter.
I can look at an '86 Chrysler manual that I have to see how that 2.6 is wired up and let you know what I find. Is the Montero similar to any of the Chrysler model of that year?

QUESTION: the dodge raider is a rebadged montero if that helps. and the manual fuel pump has been replaced with the one from the old engine. i know the inline fuel pump works because it ran before i swapped the engine. the old one ran ok but it had a knock in it.

The '85 passenger car manual is the last one for the 2.6L engine. For carbed engines what you are experiencing can be due to fast idle speed set improperly, choke linkage binding preventing proper positioning of the blade, timing mis-set, exhaust gas recirculation valve 'on' during warm-up(check cvscc valve). Check out the egr valve is closed. The weber carb is not listed as in use, rater the holley and mikuni.
So check out those possibilities.
