Dodge Repair: Brake Fluid Leak, dodge nitro, rear wheels

Question
QUESTION: Hello again Roland,

You helped me earlier today with a Dodge Nitro...this is actually another issue on another vehicle.

I have a 98 Ram 1500 that I rarely use and the other day I doscivered the brake fluid resevoir almost empty.  I filled it and two days later it was empty again.  I can see it dripping underneath the truck near the back wheels.  Got any troubleshooting advice?

Chris

PS- I left a rating on the other question now that the job is done.  Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Chris,
Leaking that fast makes me believe it may be a leaky brake line so look up from the puddle and see if you can see it. If not that and its near the inside of the tire or on the tire, then you have a leaky wheel brake cylinder that needs replacement.
Roland
Thanks for the rating and nomination. You can do it again if you are so moved.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hello again Roland...to to follow up days later...

The leak appears to be coming from above the fuel tank.  It's hitting the tank then dripping off to either side of it near the rear tires.  Any guesses?

Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,
I would suspect that there is a leak at a T-joint carrying the brake fluid to the rear wheels, juat where the line splits to send fluid to the left and right wheels. I don't have the manual to verify that but that is the only explanation I can see for a leak at the midline, above the tank. It may just be a need to tighten up a nut that attaches a line to that "T" fitting, or the line itself could be corroded and leaking. You may have to drop the tank to get to it.
