Dodge Repair: 2003 dodge ram 1500: gear shift mechanism repair, dodge ram 1500, stearing wheel

Question
QUESTION: Can you tell me how much it should cost to change a shift assemble on a 2003 dodge ram 150

ANSWER: Hi Angela,
I am not in the repair shop business so don't have any estimates for the hours of labor or the price of parts. If you can tell me more exactly the engine and transmission and also tell me what you mean by the 'shift assembly' then I should be able to look at the manual to see what parts have to be removed and thus estimate the amount of effort/time might be involved. What aspect of the shifting is broken? The parts department at the dealer should be able to tell you the cost of the parts if we can figure out which ones need relacement. It might save money to get the parts off of a wreck at at a auto parts yard. So do let me know more if what I have listed would be of help to you.

QUESTION: The truck is a 2003 dodge ram 1500 pickup with a 4.7 engine.  Not sure on the transmission.  the problem was when he went to move the shirfter in the car it was stuck and when he used force what looked like a metal sensor dropped from under the stearing wheel.  We are told that we have to replace the whole shift assembly.  I was wondering how much the part would be.  it is the piece you get to by going in the truck under the steering wheel. I hope this helps.

ANSWER: Hi Angela,
If this is an automatic transmission, from what I see in the manual it is not a very lengthy procedure to change the mechanism part of the shift system that is in the steering column. I can copy the pages from the '04 manual that I have on CD about how to do this is he wants to do it himself. The part that is required will be obvious when he gets into the mechanism but I can't believe it will be so expensive as to prevent the job from being done. I would specifically need to know if this is a manual or an automatic transmission and if possible which model of transmission as there are several of each. To send the pages my email I would need to know your email address and to do that you have to send me a PRIVATE question by checking the box to make your question private, and then tell me the email address in the body of the question. If you don't make it private then the address is automatically erased.
Please 'rate' my answer (see below).
Thanks,

QUESTION: Roland,  It is an automatic transmission.  I am not sure of the kind.  If you could send me the pages through e-mail it would be great.  e-mail address is .  Do you have any idea on how much the parts are?  If so could you let me know.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Angela,
It is either a 48 series conventional automatic transmission or a 45 series electronic transmission with many additional features (what I would call "bells and whistle". So if you can tell me which that would be helpful. On the part question, you have to know which transmission and which parts are broken, but again I don't believe the shift mechanism in the steering column is a major cost, and if it is going to a wrecking yard will be a way to reduce that cost and also give him a chance to practice on another vehicle. Also, the email address was erased to you must click the box to make your next question PRIVATE. Try to tell me which transmission this is by asking the male owner.
