Dodge Repair: 99 Dakota Drive shaft (non 4X4), side bearings, rear differential

Question
Dodge Repair: 99 Dakota Drive shaft (non 4X4), side bearings, rear differential
99 dakota drive shaft
I stepped on the gas this evening, and I felt a CLUNK, heard a pop, and my truck would no longer shift gears.  Turns out the drive shaft has separated from the differential slightly, but is still attached with the U-joints and coupler(?) (2WD)
My question is what all needs to take place, and what parts will I need to fix this, and if you'd like please include what kind of costs I'm looking at?
thanks so much in advance.

Answer
If I read your question correctly I'd sat that drive pinion in the rear axle snapped. If that is the case then you are looking at havibg the rear differential being rebuilt. That would entail replacing the ring and pinion gears, related seals and bearings and the differential side bearings at a minimum. There may be more components damaged but there is no way to know until the unit is disassembled and inspected. You are probably looking at a minimum cost of around $800.00.
