QuestionI have the press tool to take off the lower ball joints but there looks like there is cap there on top.I put the tool on and crank on it and wont break free do I need to cut off the cap first then put the press on it.
AnswerREMOVAL
Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
Remove the brake caliper and rotor (Refer to 5 - BRAKES/HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL/ROTORS - REMOVAL).
Remove the front halfshaft nut (if equipped).
Remove the steering knuckle (1) (Refer to 2 - SUSPENSION/FRONT/KNUCKLE - REMOVAL).
Move the halfshaft to the side and support the halfshaft out of the way (If Equipped).

2 - DRIVER - 8698-3
3 - BALL JOINT
4 - RECEIVER - 8698-2
Remove the snap ring from the lower control arm (HD 4X2 only).
NOTE: Extreme pressure lubrication must be used on the threaded portions of the tool. This will increase the longevity of the tool and insure proper operation during the removal and installation process .
Press the ball joint (3) from the lower control arm using special tools C-4212–F (PRESS) (1), 8698-2 (RECEIVER) (4) and 8698-3 (DRIVER) (2) (REMOVAL LOWER BALL JOINT).
REMOVAL
Remove the steering knuckle (Refer to 2 - SUSPENSION/FRONT/KNUCKLE - REMOVAL).
Remove the axle shaft from the axle (Refer to 3 - DIFFERENTIAL & DRIVELINE/FRONT AXLE - 9 1/4 AA/AXLE SHAFTS - REMOVAL).
Remove lower snap ring from the lower ball joint (LOWER SNAP RING).

2 - SPECIAL TOOL 8975-2
3 - KNUCKLE
4 - SPECIAL TOOL 8975-4
Position special tool 8975–2 (RECEIVER) (2) and 8975–4 (DRIVER) (4) with tool C4212–F (PRESS)(1) as shown to remove lower ball stud (LOWER BALL JOINT REMOVAL).
