Dodge Repair: PCM for 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan, dodge grand caravan, grand caravan

Question
QUESTION: Late last week after running some errands, when I went back to the car it started, but then died. I tried this a couple more times and the same thing happened. The following day it still wouldn't start and a jump did nothing, so I ended up having it towed to a local repair shop.

After a day and a half, I was told they couldn't locate the problem and suggested I have it towed to a Dodge dealeer for more diagnostics. By the time it arrived at the dealership, it started right away! They did some diagnostice and said the PCM was sending out 2 error code messages. Therefore, they recommend replacing it to the tune of $800! We were not in the position to shell out that amount of money at the time and were able to drive it home. Two days later it won't start again.

I did some research on line and found I could pick up a rebuilt unit for around $200, however, it needs to be programmed based on the VIN. My question is, is this a viable option and if so, is this something I can replace myself or is it recommended a professional do it? Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: lets back up a few steps...
describe the issue to me  whats does it not do  start up?
if that is the issue  did the cluster not work when it was not starting?
Whet were the error codes that were int eh PCM?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: When you initially try to start it, it starts and then dies. This will happen 2-3 times. After that, when you turn the key you just get a low hum. No clicking or anything.

As far as the error codes go, it doesn't specify. However, I could call the dealer in the morning and find out.

As far as history goes, it was working fine up until last week when I noticed the "Service Engine Soon" light came on. The next day is was off. In addition, my wife said she noticed the speedometer wasn't working for a while also, but that corrected after she "tapped" the dash.

For the heck of it, tonight I disconnected the battery thinking the PCM might re-set, but nothing. I also just tried starting it, but nothing, just that low hum.

Demographically, unfortunately I live in the Chicago area. Thanks.

Answer
U don't have a PCM prob  u have a printed ckt board issue   when u hit the top of the dash u moved the solder points on the circuit board   the error codes u will have gotten were  loss of commutation with PCM,BCM and TCM.   replace the cluster board in the cluster and have it programed by a dealer to your van.
