Dodge Repair: 98 Cummins A/C clutch replacement, on car?, dodge ram 2500, clutch replacement

Question
1998  Dodge Ram 2500 diesel manual tranny.

Can the A/C Clutch be change without changing out the compressor?  I think that is my problem.  A/C shaft turns very slowly and I can feel some cooling in the line.  Looks like a bright piece of metal edge on part of the clutch so I think something has broken off on the clutch.  I can move the clutch plate very easily.  Can I change it on the truck so I don't bother the system as a whole?  Thanks Bill

Answer
If it were a gas engine I would tell you it's not a problem to replace the clutch on the truck.  I never did much diesel work so I am less familiar with compressor placement on the 5.9L L6.  On the 5.9L Gas I know you can move the compressor with lines attatched rather easily and set it to the side for water pump, intake and other repairs that technically call for refrigerant removal.  If the diesel is like the gas and you can turn the compressor to the position you want then yeah, you can do it on-car.
