My truck keeps overheating and the check guage light comes on/off and every morning after driving 2.5 miles the ck engine light comes on, what causes this?

You need to have the codes retrieved if the check engine light is on.

Most of the time if the vehicle overheats that quick it's either low in coolant or the thermostat doesn't open up causing the engine to overheat.

What's the history of the coolant related components like the thermostat, coolant, water pump, coolant temp sensor, and radiator with cap?
