Dodge Repair: gauges quit & abs light, dodge grand caravan, pep boys

Question
I did unhook the battery cable today, then hooked it up and started it. That did not fix it right then, but I unhooked it a second time and left it for a few minutes, hooked it back up and started it. That cured it at that point. Any further suggestions?

Question -
I have a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan w/ a 3.0 engine. The other day, for some reason, the abs and service engine light came on. I noticed that all my gauges also quit, as if the car were turned off. Even while going down the road the speed odometer, tach etc… did not work. The next morning it worked fine and today it quit again. Can you help me?

Thank You

It sounds like the mechanical instrument cluster (MIC) is starting to go out on you.  Sometimes you can remove them, take them apart and see where the circuit board has gotten hot.  Other times there's no physical signs of damage but it's bad.  Diagnosing this may be difficult since communication with it cannot be done with the typical scan tool found at an autozone or pep boys.

Answer
The longer battery disconnect could have allowed power in some modules that have capacitors to fully power down.  The only thing left I can tell you is that from this point on you will more than likely need to have a mechanic look at the vehicle who has a scan tool that can communicate with more modules.
