Question
Thanks again.    I tend to agree its the convertor locking up.  What do you suggest I do?

THANKS 4 RESPONDING TO MY QUESTIUON DOUG!

I DON'T BELIEVE IT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE BRAKES.  THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE MOTOR IS SUCH THAT IT DOES NOT SMOOTHLY GO INTO IDLE WHEN I STOP THE CAR. THE 'FEELING' IS SIMILAR TO WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STOP A MANUAL SHIFT WITHOUT USING THE CLUTCH. THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE  MOTOR EVENTUALLY GOES TO NEUTRAL JUST BEFORE IT STALLS - A LOT OF UNDUE STRESS ON THE MOUNTS and me!

My 2000 neon seems to stutter and jerk as i come to a stop. its very similar to stopping a manual shift car without depressing the clutch.  in the meantime i shift the gear shift into neutral position whenever i have to stop the car.

See if applying the brakes makes a difference in the re-occurense of this condition.  Brake rotors will warp giving an on-off-on feel to the brakes also associated with an equal movement in the brake pedal.  Some pulsation can even be felt through the steering wheel.

Find a nice open stretch of road, apply the brakes while not holding the steering wheel too tightly.  Does it move side to side?

Does the pulsation still continue as you slow down but the frequency (rate) slow with vehicle speed?

Please give me more information about the transmission shifting technique.  I'm not sure I follow you.

An automatic car that bucks and jerks as you come to a stop.  It stalls once at a stop or just before. It SORT of sounds like a torque convertor is locked up when it's not supposed to.  This may or may not be what you're describing.

00 neon... I'm not sure if that's a 1gen neon or the 2gen but regardless you may want to check the motor mounts.  Failure of them though shouldn't cause stalling out though.

Have you had a mechanic drive the vehicle and give you an opinion?

Answer
If it's the convertor locking up then you will need a professional, hands-on opinion to confirm this at which point you would be subject to a diagnostic charge.  BUT this also means that if the person says "Torque convertor" and you say "install one" with that not fixing it you can hold them accountable.

At this point you need it to be diagnosed by someone who can drive it and tell.
