Dodge Repair: How hard is it to replace..., side bearings, axle bearings

Question
How hard is it to replace rear axle bearings on a 1989 dodge ram 1/2 ton pickup? Is there a refrance that I can find on the internet to help me to do this job? The quote I got from a local shop was around $600.00 and I am not willing to pay that much if the task is not that hard of one.

Answer
The re-bearing job is easy enough if you have a few tools.
You will require something to crush the sleeve on the pinion, and a torque wrench with a dial that reads in inch pounds to set preload.
Then you will require a bearing puller for one pinion bearing, and the side bearings. (or a method to cut them off...not a torch!)
You can use an old bearing and a hammer to install the new bearings if you dont have a press.
DO NOT MIX UP THE SHIMS ON THE SIDE BEARINGS!!
You will also require a method to remove the pinion bearing
races from the housing, and install new ones.
If you have access to these tools, let me know, and I'll walk you though the proceedure.
