Dodge Repair: Dodge fuel problem?, system cleanup, dodge 1500

Question
1995 Dodge 1500 4WD PU, Long bed, 360 cu. in. (5 point something liters)
The Engine just started needing to turn over many times before starting.  Always before one touch of the key and it started immediately.  Once started it runs perfectly as before. No hesitation or rough running.  After turning over many times it takes it a few seconds of struggling before catching on and then runs fine.
Shop said no codes displayed.  They suspect fuel pump allowing fuel to run back to tank (bad valve) and also said fuel pressure was low.
Estimate $500 for pump replacement will "probably fix the problem".
Auto Zone pump is $200 but can a novice handle replacement?  I would hate to spend $200 and it still not solve the problem, but then I would hate to give $500 and the shop say "guess that wasn't it".
suggestions?
Thank you.

Answer
first off its a 95 lets do some routine maintence... 99 percent of the time when a pump goes bad thats it. no starts period as for the flow valve.. I dont think so due to its simplicity I have never seen one go bad! check these things out first!!
fuel regulator
fuel filter
pcv valve "change it $3.00"
good fuel cleaner additive " I use total system cleanup located here and at autozone  http://www.berrymanproducts.com/Default.aspx?tabid=140 "
hope this stuff helps   joe
