Dodge Repair: Hesitation on Accelleration, plymouth voyager, speed town

Question
Hi Pete:

I own a 1995 Plymouth Voyager with a 3.3Liter V6.  (I assume the same engine is used in the Caravans so I hope you can help).

Symptoms:  Car was hard starting in cold weather.  I finally used heat gun to blow warm air into the air intake and it finally started.  Once I got it going, it seemed ok but, at speed (town or highweay, another problem cropped up.  It seems to "stumble" when I accellarate.  For just a brief second, it acts like it won't take the gas but it does "catch" and accellerate.  Note that very gentle acceleration does not produce the problem.  It only occurs when I give a quick shot to the gas pedal.

I had a mechanic check it out. He replaced fuel filter.  He also reports that the tune up items (plugs, wires, etc.) were all in within specs.  He said something about the "cam sensor" giving funny readings but was at a loss to explain.

He thought the fuel filter was the problem and wasn't aware of the "stumbling upon acceleration" problem till after everything was put back together.

He indicated that Chrysler batteries were a critical component of the ingition system and any weakness in the battery could be a possible culprit.  Believe it or  not, the battery is the original (almost 9 years old).  When I go to start the car though, it still gives plenty of crank to the engine.

Any ideas or suggestions?  Thanks for your help.
