Ford Repair: Replacement Instrument Cluster, 2006 mercury milan, dept of motor vehicle

Question
QUESTION: Hello Brian,

The digital display (that shows the mileage) on my 2006 Mercury Milan broke a few years ago.  In order to pass an emissions test I needed to have the cluster replaced so that the mileage would display.  I went online and purchased a junked instrument cluster.  My local Ford dealership installed the cluster and everything is working.  However, the cluster is reporting the mileage of the OLD car it came from, and not the mileage on my car.  I asked the service rep about this and he said that is not possible as the instrument cluster pulls the mileage from the vehicle.  However, I went back and verified the mileage from the cluster when I bought it and it matches what my car is now showing.  So, my question is whether they can pull the correct mileage into the cluster from my vehicle?

Thanks,
Wes

ANSWER: little confused by the last wording of your question. so the cluster you have now in the vehicle does not match the correct mileage of the vehicle ???

QUESTION: Yes, that is correct.  The cluster came out of a car with 116K miles, and that's the mileage it now displays when installed in my car.  However, the mileage on my car is at least 30K less than that.  So, can the dealership program the cluster to display my vehicle's correct mileage?

Answer
i'm a little confused because the i.c. get's the mileage reading from the pcm. assuming it was done properly. the procedure is to extract the info from the current i.c., install the new one and download the info to the new cluster. unless, the old cluster was totally inop then, it will default to the last known info in the cluster ( the one you just installed ). that being the case, you can obtain a tag from your dept. of motor vehicle to attach to the driver's door to advise of the incorrect mileage.
