Ford Repair: mis-firing Ford Ranger, apparent improvement, little flow

Question
My 2001 Ford Ranger (3.0 liter - 6 cylinder - 2 wheel drive)suddenly began seriously miss-firing (missing) several days ago. I drove the truck approx. 300 miles after the miss-firing began with no apparent improvement or worsening. I have since changed the plugs with no apparent improvement.
The missing is worst when trying to maintain speed on a level surface and disappears upon acceleration. I also notice the missing at idle.
The autoZone guy plugged it in to his meter and EGR system fault came up. The explanation is the ECM has detected too little flow on the EGR system. Possible causes are: failed EGR valve and EGR solenoid faulty. Also failed EGR pressure sensor where applicable and failed EGR position sensor where applicable.

My question is- would the EGR problems produce this kind of miss-firing or should I look elsewhere?
Thanks, John G.

Answer
there is a yes and no to this. the sensor he would need to replace is called d.p.f.e. sensor for the egr codes. if this sensor shorts out internally, it can cause all kinds of erratic readings to other sensors so, yes- replace this sensor. Should that not repair the concern. replace the plug wires and coil... very common concern/ keep me posted.. -b-
