Ford Repair: Emissions testing, code checker, emissions test

Question
QUESTION: Hello Brian, my 2001 Prizm is needing an emissions test in January and I have a check engine light on. I believe it to be the gas cap. The code that I pull off it indicates a small pressure leak. I purchased a new gas cap, and I used a code checker (ODB I believe) to reset the check engine light. I was told that even if I reset the light, the code still stay's in the computer until a full cycle is completed. I was told anywhere from 50-150 miles the cycle would be complete, causing the on-board computer to recheck for leaks, and only then can the code truly be rest/erased. Is this true? Thank you for the help.

ANSWER: yes and no. once you clear the code, it's gone. it does not store itself in another module but yes, you will need to drive the vehicle 50-150 miles so the coputer can see a complete drive cycle... but after this time line do not rerun the test yourself as you will reset the computer and have to start all over.. good luck.. -b-

QUESTION: Hello Brian, what would happen if I took my car to the emissions before the completed drive cycle? Could there be a possability that I will fail due to the code? How do I know when the drive cycle is complete? I was thinking of taking my vehicle to this company that specializes in emissions repairs, and they told me for $95, they will use software to "trick" the on-board computer into thinking the drive cycle has been completed and then take it to get tested. I am not sure if this is a good deal, but at this point ,having my car pass the emissions is paramount. The code that I pull is P0442; leak in the exhaust recirculation system i.e; gas cap or carbon canister. Thank you Brian for your help. Jared C.

Answer
you can clear the code, given the year of the car the drive cycle should happen very quickly. here's a few ways to accelerate a drive cycle. warm the vehicle up. accelerate at a reasonable speed to 60 mph for about 2 minutes then slow down to a complete stop. shut the vehicle off. perform the above procedure about 3-4 times. then drive the vehicle normal for about 10 miles. i have heard of these companies that do the " emissions trick " is it worth it ? . yes if you are trying to get the vehicle to pass because you are crunched for time and yes because they can actually fool the computer in to passing an emission test even if it fails !!!! ( sounds shady huh ? ). -b-
