Ford Repair: 2001 Ford Taurus Stalls with Theft Light, powertrain control module, pitched whine

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2001 Ford Taurus that stalls or attempts to stall when slowing on the freeway.  It acts like it is trying to shut off, theft light comes on, tach goes back to zero, lights seems to blink if they are on, other dash lights may or may not come on but the theft light seems to come on first.  It seems to be getting worse but is totally random.  No codes are recorded.  If the radio is on you will hear a popping sound in the speakers just before it starts to act up.  There is a random high pitched whine that appear to be coming from under the dash on the passenger side but I am not sure it is related since it is random as well. Changing keys does not seem to help.  Any ideas?  How likely is it to restart if is does stall?

ANSWER: give me a little bit to think about this, please e-mail me again. my guess is you either have a bad alternator ( the whining noise ) sending out a bad R.F. signal ( radio frequency ) to your powertrain control module or you have a bad synchronizer gear ( used to be a distributor ) in its time..

QUESTION: Thanks for the follow up.  Is is common for the both of these to be able to fail without setting any codes?  What is the best way to test?

ANSWER: is this a 3.0 litre with dual over head cam or overhead valve

QUESTION: It is a 3.0 overhead valve. VIN 1FAFP53231A266761.

Answer
this is just a shot in the dark since you don't have a check engine light on. there are 2 real good possibilities but will require you to google a picture of the parts as i am not able to upload them. i'm suggesting you disconnect your d.p.f.e. sensor. on the 3.0 litre engine it is located if you were staring at the engine  pretty much dead center closest to the back of the engine. it will have one connector and two vacuum type lines that come of the exhaust. they are abou 1/2" in diameter. this sensor when it shorts out can do all kinds of weird things with or without a check engine light. the other is. there is a fuse panel located in your engine compartment. your owners manual will tell you which is which but, replace the pcm-eec relay. it is a $5.00. shot in the dark as what you are experiencing is not a common concern.
