Ford Repair: replacing spark plugs 03 E-350, autolite spark plugs, hex size

Question
I need to replace the spark plugs on my 2003 Ford E-350 5.4L I am replacing all the coil packs. What specific tools will I need?  Like wrench/socket sizes extension sizes and lengths.

Answer
The spark plugs are 5/8" hex size. As far as extensions and sizes, I have never kept track of those I use for this engine. Whatever works for each plug location the best. My socket drawer at work has a value of about $7K, and on the Ford 5.4 I use a lot of that drawer to change the plugs. This is a challenging job, even for professional techs. This engine is known for blowing spark plugs out, and stripping the threads. I suggest you google the project ahead of you and read some about how to avoid problems and procedures to assure no future plug blowouts.

Many shops charge anywhere from 3.5 to 5 hours to change these plugs in a E350. And please, please, do not use those nice popular spark plugs that certain auto parts stores sell. Considering the time and work involved, I recommend Motorcraft or Autolite spark plugs. Good luck, and be careful!
