Ford Repair: f350 6 liter deisel, air leaks, variable geometry

Question
I have recently lost a large portion of my power under heavy load.  The turbine spins freely but with the variable geometry turbo I believe it could be stuck with carbon build up.  I have looked into cleaning this carbon and I was wondering what you thought of cleaning the exhaust side of the turbo with Easy Off Oven cleaner.  I was also wondering which gaskets I will need to replace when I remove the turbo for cleaning.  I appreciate your time.  I answer questions in the "electrical in the home" section at this site.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello Rick, I have seen the vanes get carboned up and bind, but there a ring in the turbo called a unison ring that will sieze and not let the vanes move. Possibly the vct solenoid is not working properly also that will cause a lack of boost issue. Also check for any leaks in the hoses to the turbo and the inner cooler, air leaks will cause little boost issues. Hope this helps Thanks Tony
