Ford Repair: Idle adjustment, ford e250 van, vise grips

Question
Hi Mike,
How do you increase the idle speed on a 1993 ford E250 van.4.9L straight 6cy EFI.What should the idle speed be at normal temp.

                       Thanks
                        Steve

Answer
the idle is electronically controlled but you can set base idle remember never unplug or plug in a ford idle control motor while engine is running or within ten seconds of shutting key off because you can damage driver in pcm.

before idle adjustment clean throttle bore and remove iac motor on bore and clean it
restart and roadtest if that doesn't work the proceed below.

to set base idle run truck to normal operating tempature-shut it off wait 10 seconds-unplug iac motor on throttle bore-this is silver or aluminum looking valve with a two wire connector on throttle bore-after you unplug it start truck it should idle at about 550 rpm-if not adjust to this speed with idle screw on bore it will probably be small screw with 8mm head or allen wrench style some you have to turn with needle nose vise grips.then shut truck back off plug motor in and restart it should idle up then slowly come down to normal speed which is around 750-800 rpm.

good luck
