Ford Repair: Key entry, mercury grand marquis, grand marquis ls

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis LS with 101,000 miles on it My problem is that the key works the ignition and and the trunk but will not open either door. The fob will open the locks and the keypad will open the locks but not the key--I am not getting much help from the dealer that sold me the car.  This is just one thing I did not check before I signed over the check. I appreciate any help.

ANSWER: either way this is not a big problem-do you have a square and an oval key or just one-sometimes a cylinder has been changed and they didn't change them all-have the dealer cut you a key by the vin number for the doors and see if it fits-door lock cylinders are available individually on keys with 8 bits on them-there is a bulletin on this that came out in late 99. i have a 97 crown vic and it has two different keys the ign and trunk are the same the door is different.it could have been changed before it got it also. yours can be rekeyed but could be a little costly. the dealer should try to cut a key by vin good luck.

QUESTION: Thank you for such a quick response--BUT on the third day of ownership I walk to the car and opened with the fob at 10 feet away and then I tried to lock the door with key (something I had not tried) it Locked and Unlocked and now it works every time??? both keys??? I Don't understand. What do you think?

Answer
if the previous owner didn't use the key very much-tumblers could have been sticking or the rod from cylinder to latch may have been sticking-if the are working now be sure and used the key from time to time to make sure it doesn't stick.
