Ford Repair: water leak, 97, crown

Question
I just read a previous question that you answered. We have a 97 crown vic and there is some leak getting inside when it rains. The carpet matting is soaked on both driver and passenger sides. On passenger side it looks like it is coming from behind a black box that is bolted to the fire wall. How can we fix this ourselves?

Answer
Hi Lisa,

I really don't recommend repair work to be done by non-qualified technicians. What I try to do is help people understand what could be leaking into their automobile so they have a better understanding of the condition, when they do take it to a qualified technician.
As far as your r/s front floor leak goes, the first thing that needs to be done is a water test and inspection of the area of complaint. Many things can cause a leak complaint such as this.
97 crown vic's leaking under the passenger side glove box area have shown to be a failed fresh air intake gasket and a blocked heater box or evap case drain. Water will enter into these areas of the heater box assembly and show up dripping under the glove box or following the bulk head panel by the cowl seam and onto the floor. So, I would begin by looking at those items first.
The left side front floor area of complaint have shown to be a failed e-brake cable grommet that is mounted to the bulk head allowing water draining off of the plenum chamber to follow the cable past the grommet and into the interior floor pan of the automobile or a high cowl panel to lower 'A' post seam that may have dried and split, allowing water into the interior of the floor pan.
This is not a complete list of things that could be leaking but, its a good place to start. The water test inspection would show the rest. I would recommend any Ford Dealership in your area to be able to test and recommend the repairs required to solve this complaint.
