Ford Repair: 2001 Taurus, tow driver, fuel filter

I have 2001 Taurus.  recently encountered a problem keeping the vehicle running.  starts fine but stalls as soon as I take foot off accelerator.  Tow driver was able to back car out of parking space with one foot on brake and one on accelerator.  after a minute or so the car ran fine and I was able to drive it to the repair shop.  just looking for some idea what the problem may be so I don't get any  surprises.

Is the check engine light on? If not, change the fuel filter and drive home. If it is on, nab a scanner and take it back to the parts store if you have to. I am not recommending that you do that, I'm just saying what some people have done. If you do find the code, let me know what it is. The code, not the definition. Just the codes.
