Ford Repair: 98 explorer, sweet home oregon, fuse box

My son is having trouble with his explorer, it has the push button 4wd..it is shifting to 4 low on its own and will not stay in 2wd...is this possibly a vaccume issue or fuse...or relay? we live in different states so I havent had a chance to check it out in person. Is there a way to remove a fuse or something to keep this from happening until he can afford to take it to a certified mechanic? do you have any suggestions that I can have him do? Depending on the year model, I would say late 90's? The best way to disable the four wheel drive would be to remove the front drive shaft for the time being. He could look at the fuse box and pull the fuse, but without looking at it I cannot say for sure that it would fix it. The fuse controls the circuit of the transmission and transfer case. I would recommend keeping it in four wheel drive until he can get it to a garage.
