Ford Repair: Rough Start (Ranger), ford ranger 4x4, timing chains

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 ford ranger 4x4 (95,000 miles). When I let my truck set like...overnight or for just a few hours it will then start rough and last for maybe 3-10 seconds (depending). However, once I get the truck started and shut if off for like.. 30 minutes or so it starts up fine the next time. I am only aware that the only serious engine issue I have is the cheap timing chain kits they put in this particular truck and think maybe the timing could be the issue, until I go to start it up shortly after shut off and it runs fine :). I have also thought the fuel injectors are failing. I don't think it's a valve or sensor issue but not sure really.
The last bit of info. that might help... I also have a slight vibrating/humming sensation at 2300 rpms in both park and drive (approx. 62 mph).. could this also cause rough idle at cold engine start?

ANSWER: hey there, just out of curiousity. have you had a tune up done to this truck yet. with extremy worn tune up parts, i sometimes see a missfire on start up for the first 10 seconds or so, i have never had a prolem with timing chains on any ranger, but what would help me a little bit is i need to know what eninge you have in this truck, there is a 2.3 4 cylinder. a 3.0 liter v6. or a 4.0 liter v6. get back to me with this..

QUESTION: The engine I have is the 4.0, but not sure if it is the sohc or simple ohv. I have never had timing chain issues with rangers either until this one. I have changed the plugs and wires. I have had the fuel filter changed, intake cleaned, fuel pressure (assumingly checked) etc. etc. Do U really think that a misfire would only happen of cold engine starts and not when starting the engine that has already ran? I don't believe that I installed the plugs wrong either! I checked that GAP specs on the ranger before replacing plugs. I am lost, but I have been told by 2 mechanics that the timing chain issue stems from negligant engineering :) or maybe... little to NO oil changes during its life span :(. Thank you for ur troubles helping with ideas to whats a fault, ur help is much appreciated. Also... I dont know if this helps but a label on the head of the motor says (ohv) so maybe that means its NOT the sohc YEAHHH.

Answer
hey there. i still have a problem believing that a timing chain would be the root of a problem for a misfire for the first 10 seconds,,  maybe in the double over head came engine with cam phasers this could be an issue but not on the ohv.  If it says ohv then is deintly is not the over head cam 4.0. you are going to have to narrow down witch cylinder is misfiring and inspect that plug. i still feel that a plug or a wire will be at fault for this. simetimes the plug gets tightened a little to much or dropped. causing the porcilin to get a hairline crack, this is usualy enough for a misfire untill it warms up. let me know what happens, good luck.
