Ford Repair: 1998 Ford Ranger 4WD 4.0 v6 59,050.00 miles, obd 2 scanner, crank sensor

Question
Over the last 3 weeks (on occasion) starting isn't smooth. It turns over pretty well but takes a little more time to kick-in. I live in Prescott, Az- alt. 5300 ft. and it gets hot (up to 94 last month). I am due to get the 60,000 check next month. I've tried to keep it maintained regularly and not drive it "hard". Yes, that is the original milage and I'm the original owner. Today, my garage parked truck won't start. It turns over strong but, will not kick-in at all! Any ideas?? THANK YOU!

Answer
You need to check for fuel and fire, or lack there of actually. Altitude can tinker with vehicle drivability, but I am pretty sure that the sensors on your truck adjust to compensate. Has the service engine light been on. I have to ask, though I doubt, or you would have probably mentioned it, being a garage kept truck. If you have lack of fire, I would go with a cam or crank sensor. A lack of fuel, check for power to the fuel pump, or possible pump failure. I suspect, that you will need to have the vehicle towed to either hook the vehicle up to a scanner, or replace the fuel pump. One other possibility would be that the truck jumped time, which is unlikely. If you can get your hands on an OBD-2 scanner, they start out at 60 dollars and up. Your truck doesn't need to run, you just need the switch on to retrieve the codes.
