Ford Repair: focus oil/quit on highway, mileage vehicle, liability purposes

2007 2 later focus-son changed oil and must have had leak in plug or filter so light came on and car stopped running on highway.  does this engine have a turn off feature when pressure or oil gets too low?  He said the fill cap and engine do not smell burnt.  might the engine be ok after it is towed and sits overnight if he finds the leak issue/corrects and re-fills?  I am guessing it will either turn over or not and if it turns over might it be ok?

This is a Grey area for us, for liability purposes. Have the car towed to a garage, and let them take the proper procedures. Even on a low mileage vehicle like that, their will be damaged to the engine, even if it does turn over. Too know how much damage, you almost have to tear down the engine. If this had happened in the city, it might be different. He was on the freeway, when it locked down.
