Ford Repair: Follow up on 99 Escort air problem, clutch control, gas gauge

Question
QUESTION: I had to put in a new question, since it would not let me add another follow up about my 99 Escort which had the air fixed, but the compressor would not shut off.
It turns out that they were not putting in a Ford part.
They tried at least 2 parts....."controller" is all my receipt said.  When they put a Ford part in , it worked fine.
Just for good measure it seems, they also added a 30 dollar part which they had listed as the ac clutch control.

Air is working fine, but when driving home, I noticed my
temp. gauge was not working. It is way over the hot range, but my car is not overheating.  Apparently, something happened while working on the car, and now the gauge is broken.  They don't know why.....they checked the fuse, but it's fine.  So I will have to go back next week to have it checked out further.
Thank you for your help.  You were sure right about using Ford parts....For some reason, the part that was supposed to be compatible with my car, was not.
Now to get the gauge fixed.

ANSWER: thanks for the report most people don't let you know-the controller is the intergrated relay controller or irc. good luck with temp guage-it is probably going to be a wire off of temp sender or pinched and shorted somewhere-if the other guages were working it couldn't be a fuse. good luck.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: My gauges have not been fixed yet.  The temp and gas gauge work on and off.  As far as my air working, I would like to know how I can tell if the compressor is staying on or not.
I was told it was working fine, but I notice when the air is shut off, the belt to the compressor is running.
(if I'm looking at the right belt)....It's to the left under my hood and near the front.
If the air is shut off, I would think the belt to the compressor would not run.

Seems like I have to find out things for myself, since I'm not getting adequate answers from the mechanic.

During the whole unecessary ripping apart of everything because they didn't have a Ford part in there to begin with, now I have to deal with the gauges not working right.

And I'm hearing a sound when I turn the car off .....I've had this car for 8 years and have never heard it before.

When I turn the engine off after having it run with the air on, it's making various sounds.  When I open the hood, I can see the sounds are coming from the air line.....sounds like gurgling for lack of a better word.

Never did this before in the 8 years I've had this car.
It's not the normal sound when the air is shut off. It almost sounds like something is going to pop.  After about 15 to 20 seconds, it stops.

I will probably have to pay to have the gauges fixed, although, I don't think I should have to, since they caused it to happen.
There are places that specialize in air conditioning, but I have no idea who is trustworthy or not.
So mainly I want to know how can I tell if that compresssor is still running even if the air is supposed to be shut off?
Thank you.  I would like to be armed with some info when I take it back yet again.

Answer
if your wires are ok then i don't know what they could have done to affect the guages because really except for sending units in engine compartment and the wires to them all other components for guages are inside vehicle under dash.

the belt will turn anytime engine is running but that is only turning the pulley the inside of compressor doesn't turn until a/c clutch engages-you should have several noises when you turn your car off when a/c has been running you should have a hissing/gurgling noise as the high and low pressure in a/c system equalizes and this usually takes between 15 seconds to a little over a minute-exhaust should pop and crackle as it starts to cool off

one you may not have the best techs or you could have very talented techs sometimes things just go wrong-as far as not straight answers
from your tech i think on the a/c you don't understand how it works because if the noise your hearing is the pressure equalization then it has done it since you've owned your car and will continue to do so as long as your air works you are probably just looking for something now.

what do you do for a living?
