Ford Repair: 88 F-350 cranks @ solenoid, but no ignition response, push button switch, fusible links

Question
My F-350 Std 7.3 diesel has a push button switch at the solenoid on the passenger side fenderwell I've been using to start vehicle from under hood.  No when I turn on key there are no dash lights...I just replaced commutator module on steering column and basically same results.  Old commutator has no signs of burning.  Normally I put the truck in neutral, turn the key on and let my brother push the button.  The other night he said he saw smoke, but not sure where from.  we were 185 miles from home, so I stopped and started several times in between, but here we are now.  The truck is 45 miles from my mechanics shop and he's out of town until the 23rd of March.  I need to use it ASAP.  my one mechanic said to check the fusible links...and my head is spinning with that thought.

Answer
That is exactly where I would start as well. It's pretty easy to locate. The link is generally right beneath the solenoid. Look for heat damage to any of the wires. My bet is, that is where your smoke came from. It is cause for concern though. Be very cautious not to put yourself, or others at risk from an electrical fire. The replacement for the link is found at most if not any parts store. However, do not replace the link with just a plain wire.
