Ford Repair: alternator, improper repairs, pigtail

Question
i recently changed my starter due to it going out.started my truck "91 f150 4.9 straight 6 standard"it started great but had a little noise under the hood.i drove it around the block less than a quarter mile and i smelt smoke opened the hood and my alternator was smoking bad.can you tell me why????

Answer
the pigtail where the three big wires go into alternator probably burnt
replace  with new alternator  and pigtail if it did-solder the wires do not crimp them. was common problem in the late 80's and early 90's
especially if poor quality parts and improper repairs were made when original alt. went out.
