Ford Repair: Troubleshooting, faulty sensor, oil sending unit

Question
Hi James, I have a 98 Ford Expedition 2wd, 5.4L v8.  This vehicle isn't driving me anywhere but nuts.  While driving, the check oil light comes on and at the same time the temperature gauge jumps to the HOT mark, however the oil pressure is good and the engine is not overheating.  The vehicle then begins to go into limp mode, and when I turn the truck off and immediately turn it on, everything reads okay.  Could this be a cluster problem, or is it something else?

Answer
I would start with the oil sending unit. The faulty sensor(s) are telling your computer to go into safe mode, to protect itself. If it was me, I would run it on a Genesis scanner. It will cost you 45 or so, but at least you won't be throwing parts at it. My personal favorite chain shop is Maxi Muffler believe it or not.
