Ford Repair: Flexplate vs Flywheel, fly wheel, ford dealership

Chris, I have a 97 F150 5.4L 8 cylinder automatic w/a Canadian VIN.  Problem:  Have a new starter but now I need either a flywheel or flexplate.  The Ford dealership in my town is no help and the other mechanics want to take the truck apart before making a decision.  The Chilton book is not help.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

hey there. the Chilton book does help a bit but it will not get as in depth as most people would like it too. If the fly wheel teeth are worn then you have no choice but to have the transmission removed and havethe flywheel replaced. Let me know if you have any other concerns..
