Ford Repair: Temperature Gage Issue, ford aerostar, temperature gage

Question
QUESTION: Over the summer my car overheated, my husband replaced the water pump and the radiator.  Recently my temperature gage moves radically and this past Saturday the car began to overheat.  My husband changed the thermometer, flushed the radiator and added more coolant.  The gage still moves radically.  What might the issue be?  Also do you have to add coolant to the reservoir or can you add it directly to the radiator?  Thanks!

ANSWER: no info on car type please read what i need for you to post-all cars are not the same and have different causes for same problem give me more info and repost.

QUESTION: doh on me, sorry about that.  I have a 1996 Ford Aerostar.

Answer
if it is hot add to resevoir-if cold you can add to radiator-

as far as radically there are several things first is it really overheating or possibly bad sending unit

is the cooling system clean?-a dirty cooling system can reclog even a new radiator-eat the fins off of a water pump

you could have a major problem like blown or leaking head gaskets
or minor like air in the system i would have it checked out i have no doubt in your husbands ability to repair it but a second opinion on the cause may save you some money and time-have it diagnosed pay for that then he can do the repairs just be sure and use good quality parts and do it correctly-this vehicle may have a timing cover leaking also.
