Ford Repair: High Idle - 2002 F-150, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
2002, F150 4 x 4, 4.2L 130,000 miles:
I am experiencing a high idle that grows progressively higher as I drive. I have had the code read and it claims that I need to change the air flow control valve. The only time I get a code is after I shut the engine off then restart it. I have disconnected the air flow valve and the engine stalls. Because I only ssem to get a code after I shut the engine down at high idle I believe that I am getting a false code because  I have also checked for vacuum leaks without success.

Answer
The mass air flow sensor could very well be giving you this problem. Here is what you do. The part is about 100 bucks, before core charge. Pester the parts guy with questions about that you have heard that the throttle position sensor is tied into the mass air flow sensor and that you don't feel like dropping 100 dollars to be wrong. If you get a good parts guy, he will let you refund the mass air flow sensor if that is not the problem. You will need to complete a few drive cycles for the computer to stop thinking it's bad, so don't be alarmed if you don't see an immediate change or fix.
